Grand Mufti N.P. Usman Mohideen
(Baqavi, Mazahiri, Qasimi)
Grand Mufti N.P. Usman Mohideen is among the most eminent Islamic jurists in India, carrying forward a legacy of over 58 years in Islamic scholarship, legal interpretation, and spiritual leadership. His life’s work has been dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of classical Islamic knowledge, the issuance of authoritative fatwas in accordance with both Shariah and constitutional values, and the moral guidance of Muslim communities across the nation.
Having received his education from some of the most respected centers of learning in the Islamic world — including Jamia Al-Baqiyathus Salihat, Vellore, Mazhahir Uloom, Saharanpur, and Darul Uloom Deoband — he holds the distinguished titles of Alim (Baqavi), Fazil (Mazahiri), Mufti (Qasimi). His intellectual lineage is rooted in the spiritual mentorship of Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandhlawi, under whom he received bay’at, and the caliphate of Hakim al-Shaykh Zakiuddin Ahmad, representing a lineage of deep piety and scholarship.
For decades, Grand Mufti Usman Mohideen has been at the forefront of Islamic education and jurisprudence in South India, serving as Principal of Jamia Al-Baqiyathus Salihat Islamic University for over two decades, and guiding generations of scholars, jurists, and community leaders. His rulings and legal opinions are held in high regard not only throughout India, but also by esteemed institutions in Mecca, Medina, and Egypt, reflecting international recognition of his scholarship.
His leadership extends beyond the academic realm. He has served as President of the Federation of All Arabic Colleges (Majlis-e-Madaris-e-Arabia, Tamil Nadu), Deputy Ameer-e-Shariath of Jamiath Ulema-e-Hind (New Delhi and Tamil Nadu), President of Jamathul Ulama Sabai (Vellore), and as a Senate Member of the University of Madras, representing the scholarly voice of India’s Muslim community at the highest institutional levels.
He interacted closely with and was politically trained by Quaid-e-Millat Muhammad Ismail and the Ayakudi leaders, whose vision for community empowerment and constitutional engagement deeply influenced his approach to leadership and social reform.
Revered across the southern and northern states of India as the Grand Mufti, his counsel has guided thousands on matters of law, ethics, and faith. His career stands as a testament to lifelong scholarship, unwavering integrity, and the pursuit of justice in accordance with divine principles.
